new classes on top of the gym – RECOGNITION AWARD

BORG lienz

‘HOUSE OF BEAUTIFUL THINGS’: The hermetic nature of the historical buildings of BORG and the Spitalskirche calls for a design counterpoint: a minimalist solitaire stands confidently opposite the historical ensemble and creates peace in its simplicity. The light creative pavilion appears as an inviting, open place for art and freedom of thought. The old park landscape seems to flow through the glass base of the pavilion. An expansive roof structure stretches over the simple, rectangular solitaire, which stands as an extension exactly on the outer walls of the underground gymnasium. This roof construction is a striking, identity-creating element and creates functional added value. The twist of the new building forms trapezoidal gaps between the old city wall, which stage a dynamic between old and new: the striking horizontally layered roof overhang comes into contact with the tactilely valuable vertical city wall and the tower and becomes the adequate backbone for the open-air stage. The special lessons -workshop is optimally operated on one level, the neighboring functions enrich each other, connections between the classrooms create synergies in the classroom and create an inviting environment space continuum. The canopy, which cantilevers on all sides, provides shade for the west facade of the gymnasium, but with its protection it also interweaves the new classrooms with the garden room.  The green space between the new pavilion and the ‘city wall’ monument forms the optimal outdoor space for creative work as a contrast to the lessons in the former hospital.
