residential area südtirolersiedlung – recognition award

The new building continues the existing character strengths of the ‘South Tyrolean settlement’ typology. The urban typology of the inner courtyards is sharpened and further developed according to the local potential.  Elongated and point-shaped buildings determine the appearance and form extensive, open squares: They form a semi-public green center for games, sports, meetings, rest and ‘urban gardening’, but also open to the surroundings. The attractive contrast of closed-open urban space plays with the opposites of narrow + wide. The urban cycle and footpath axes continue on the site, residential streets are used for playing, deliveries and the fire brigade. A main path running from south to north leads through the entire area away from the traffic axes and connects the community facilities (youth club, neighborhood club and kindergarten) with each other. Good orientation and a network of paths in the green space create a good basis for the new identity of the district without fear spaces and residual areas. Based on existing South Tyrolean settlements, each house has a passageway that includes covered access with side rooms for disposal, bicycles and caretaker service.
