primary school Tarrenz – recognition award

renovation and extension

The existing elementary school building and the attached former kindergarten are staggered in position and height on Lehnenweg and are currently surrounded by sealed traffic areas with no quality of life. Discreet interventions minimize the consumption of gray energy – a compact extension to the east makes the district appear as a simple, large whole. The newly placed building is a proportional extension of the multi-purpose hall – VS – kindergarten ensemble, creates an adequate appearance for the VS on both sides of the Lehenweg and, together with the kindergarten, frames the new, protected school yard in the south. Instead of parked cars, children and villagers are now taking over public spaces. A two-story lightweight wooden building, which is built over the existing club premises, houses the new general area of the school. The school shines as a public meeting place and is ready for all-day lessons tomorrow. A large, elevated auditorium, together with the library, forms the beginning of an open house. It floats like a cockpit above the sunken schoolyard, which serves as an extension of the fresh air space for the dining room, the workroom and the gymnastics room on sunny days. From the west and east, the students come directly into the new central cloakroom under cover. The entrance area generously takes on the distribution role and, together with the schoolyard, is a flowing spatial sequence and ideal learning workshop for all 3 clusters and the after-school care center. The common design language of the facades weaves new and old into a unity. It is finely differentiated in its depth and gives the school a new identity through the uniform appearance of the thermally renovated facade.
