community center steeg – 2nd place

The village center of Steeg is characterized by its characteristic design – traditional ‘Tyrolean houses’ with residential, tourist and agricultural use and a gable roof with the ridge facing the street. The intention of the design is to create a central house with a clear shape + shell that unites administration and clubs under one roof. The room program fits well into the existing cubature by converting and adding floors, and the new music rehearsal room sets an accent at the highest level! Everything is naturally accessible via a partially covered step system and serves as a waiting area and communication hub on weekdays. During events, the tiered front area becomes a stage for the musicians; the meeting room on the ground floor serves as an extension for performances (backstage), if necessary. This means that the main entrance can be used as a hybrid music pavilion and there is enough space for rows of spectators to sit in the village square. If necessary, the central street space becomes a meeting zone, the traffic slows down and is therefore quieter! A loggia in front serves as a roof over the ground floor and provides weather-protected access on all levels. The new ridge of the gable roof strengthens the main facade of the community center and creates height in the roof space where the rehearsal room is logically located. If necessary, the room sequence: rehearsal room-foyer-recreation room can be combined as a room continuum. Only a mezzanine level lowered from the village square, the new Schützenstüberl access area creates, with just a few interventions, an exciting appearance, a high-quality lounge area on the village square and a light-flooded ambience for the new ‘Schützenstüberl’ far from the cellar character! The existing building will be carefully converted and the existing supporting structure will be respected. The facades, the extension and the new facade above are deliberately designed as a wooden structure in keeping with the village surroundings.
