An ensemble of two buildings is both music rehearsal center for the military and police bands and the Bregenz music school. A simple new building reinforces the finely structured existing building and allows for a symbiotic relationship between old and new. The selected clear geometry strengthens the ensemble with a front building as a ‘lighthouse’ and is therefore an address that is easy to find. The addition of simple building cubes next to the historical stock creates an ensemble that respects existing structures and develops them with appropriate calm, which does not overload the heterogeneous street development ‘Am Tannenbach’. A transparent, open and inviting entrance to the musicians’ center is the contact point for the symphony, music workshop and meeting place. This base zone forms the common address, a mirrored joint connects the buildings at the same level and forms a direct access from the barracks area.A two-storey foyer for all musicians provides a view of the rehearsal room. The foyer and the shop window-like instrument store as well as the street space can be used at festivals. It is a symbol of the openness of the place and puts the hermetic nature into perspective. The offices of the Landessymphony are easily accessible on the upper floor above the forecourt. Here the view goes into the crown of the bluebell tree and through it to Lake Constance. The uniforms are stowed away in the upper foyer and, in their large number, form an impressive interior with a simultaneous view of the rehearsal room. The orchestra rehearsal room is an imposing pillar-free hall measuring more than 17 x 17 m. Sloping down from the entrance, the required height graduation follows the natural topography. A rectangular grid of the cassette roof enables acoustically adequate equipment and north-facing roof field glazing. The project leaves the DNA of the Rossstall – telling old stories – and gives it an active role in the daily system with its use as a multi-purpose hall, offices and meeting room in the central tower. Access to the multi-purpose hall directly from the foyer requires additional access to the rooms behind it. The removal of the side ceiling panels creates a central gallery level and an internal connection on the upper floor. In the east wing, the military and police bands have their offices and register rehearsal rooms, which are also illuminated by the northern lights from the roof. The common meeting room under the impressive roof of the central tower in the Rossstall emphasizes the special symbiosis between the musicians.
