rooftop MU9-11 – 3rd place

museumsstrasse 9-11 innsbruck

The competition area on Museumsstraße is an intermediary between two edges of the city, which should be further developed and strengthened according to local potential. The houses at Museumsstraße 9+11 form a block edge that has remained open to the rear. This multi-layered view of the city is to be strengthened along the green area up to the greenhouse by adding a rooftop storey. In order to strengthen the characteristic spatial staging of the Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum from the late 19th century – coming from Museumsstraße – the extension is designed in a particularly calm manner due to the analogy of both flanking block edges on the square and is designed with a 2-storey attic space as a double gable. The two-storey double-roof- structure is clad in a uniform guise, a singular viewing window (summit-storming deck) on the green space precisely emphasizes the special nature of the location with a view of the Nordkette mountains. The roof membrane is made of rigid lamellas protecting against the sun, steering the heat input. They provide feel on the one hand and permeability on the other hand. A vertical construction grid interweaves the roof structure with the underlying stock from the 1970s. The rhythm of the facade grid points around the corner and emphasizes the future urban axis along the greenhouse in the direction of Angerzellgasse. In the central backyard, the charming world of balconies remains unchanged, it is enhanced by a staircase to a central green space for all users. When the visitor reaches the reception, a spacious atrium invites them to linger. At this point, the interior extends over three levels and ensures clarity: communicative seating steps and walkways to the upper floors arouse curiosity and lead through the open office building like lifelines. The path is at the same time staging, a place to pause, to gossip, but also an auditorium and a theatre. At the top, the attic becomes a kind of conservatory, a bright space between inside and outside. During the further tour through a move+ relax area, a communal kitchen with lunch tables, roof terrace and the desk-sharing zone, you can experience the entire panorama of the city center and the mountains in the south.
