Some build only once in a lifetime, some just can’t get enough of it. In this case, the old apartment of the 5-storey apartment building in Innsbruck Saggen was completely renovated in 2005 and in 2012 it expanded downwards from the 1st floor to mezzanine level. Thanks to a good structural engineer, more and more walls could be removed because of the underpinnings above. The new spatial suite of rooms now feels like a house within a house for the family of four! The garden, which – as is usual with Wilhelminian style buildings – is located on the basement level, can be reached via an external staircase through the veranda on the ground floor. The former anteroom of both apartments is opened up to the inner courtyard, creating a communicative center for cooking and partying with plenty of daylight as far as the – formerly gloomy – center of the deep floor plans. The new staircase, which now connects the living levels, floats above the bedroom to save space and comes naturally to the dining area of the open kitchen-living room. A slight widening of the loggia creates an outdoor living space on the upper floor, perforated and folded aluminum railings bring the sun right under the table: The quiet, green inner courtyard – oasis of the peripheral development can thus also be experienced while cooking!
