sometimes in life you meet special people in strange places, that’s what happened to me with Bas and Wendy from Amsterdam. We met at the last corner of Brazil in 2005 and since then we have had a friendship with beautiful experiences, but – due to the local distance – with long breaks in between. During our visit to their dutch home in Hilvesum in 2008, Bas asked me for my help in converting a stable and a small outbuilding on the island of Ameland into holiday apartments, which was a lot of fun. The Frisian island is a nature park in the mud flats, where more sea lions than people live in winter. In summer, the sand island awakens from its sleep and nature can be explored by bike, boat or on wooden walkways. If you’re looking for peace and quiet and don’t need summer heat, you should definitely stop by. We have planned 5 two-story apartments in the once thatched stable, which is an impressive 9 m high. The small outbuilding ‘Skip Lodge’ contains a sixth, stand-alone residential unit and was recently lovingly completed independently by the new operator.
