extension primaryschool Arzl – 2nd place

Erweiterung

The existing buildings are staggered in position and height on the slope. Together with the comb-like kindergarten, they form a complex, functioning ensemble. This harmonious structure has not been changed. The main school building will be compactly extended to the west. A proportional extension as a pavilion between the school, gymnasium and kindergarten creates an adequate entrance. In front of the school there is a spacious forecourt, which is clearly defined by the cubature of the building. The access joint creates a clearly visible, covered entrance area that enhances the schoolyard as the centerpiece with new entrances and all-day functions. A single-story pavilion with a library, a music room for the day care center and a foyer is a filter between the entrance and the west-side open area. An open foyer acts as a social hub, internal distributor and active center.  The library is accessible to everyone at this point. In the adjacent open area, a covered outdoor space will be created to expand the space in what is probably the most beautiful spot on the site. Exits to west-facing loggias create views of the outdoors and bring daylight to every floor. All-day lessons mean an increased space requirement for games, exercise units and rest periods. All daycare classes as learning, play and relaxation rooms on the ground floor have a direct relationship to the natural area. The dining room as a lunch table is adjacent to the day care classes. Through variable use, the school kitchen can expand the day care program or support the “healthy snack” program. There is therefore a clear reorganization: on the upper floors there are two regular class clusters of the same size with the classrooms for special use, on the ground floor there is the day care center, the general rooms and the administration. The existing building is very south exposed with its openings. A wooden frame in front provides constructive sun and heat protection and enhances the existing classes on all floors in relation to the open space. The roof areas of the intermediate joint become usable and expand the school’s space. Protected by the outer wall of the gymnasium, a free class can be created through simple measures.

On the north facade, an outside staircase creates the necessary second escape route with shaded terraces.
